My Students

I serve a population in Northern California, of hard-working students and families. Over seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and are second language learners. I love to teach with simulation and project based learning!

Reading nonfiction is a great way for kids to develop critical thinking and analytical skills and, the ability to read and understand complex texts.

Our common core state standards are now requiring over 50% texts to be non-fiction. I would love to have Scholastic News to help make news more relevant to my third graders!

My Project

Scholastic News is an amazing resource to help build non-fiction comprehension skills. With this magazine, they are being exposed to nonfiction and expository writing. This helps to broaden their reading skills, and activate their prior knowledge, which in turn will help come time for state assessments. Classroom magazines are a great source of high-interest nonfiction. It helps make current events more real and exciting!! I team teach third grade and I teach ELA and SS to all 50 third graders at our school. My goals are to have students read this magazine weekly and dig deep into the articles and non-fiction text features and structures. It will be a great tool in their exploration of non-fiction texts.
