My Students

My students communicate differently by using picture symbols. All lessons in our classroom must have printed picture symbols to go along with verbal communication. An interactive white board would allow for more engaging and interactive lessons and help build important communication skills.

My students are currently in a self contained 6:1:2 classroom and are from high poverty areas in Brooklyn.

They are all on the Autism Spectrum and are primarily non-verbal. Currently some of the students communicate with picture symbols and some do not have a communication system in place. For this reason, all lessons in the classroom must have printed picture symbols to go along with any verbal communication that takes place. This is extremely time consuming and not very engaging. An interactive whiteboard would allow for me to reach my students more effectively and help them build very necessary communication skills with engaging lessons. With lack of funding our students go without some of the most basic classroom necessities so receiving an interactive whiteboard is out of the question.

My Project

Having an interactive whiteboard in our classroom means students will be able to take part in interactive lessons and games that will help them build both academic and life skills. It means that all lessons can be provided with visuals that best help them learn. It will help students associate verbal communication with pictures to help them communicate more effectively and be able to gain access to some of their most basic needs.

This donation will help improve all of my students lives for the better.

They are 6th/7th graders that are unable to communicate some of their most basic needs on a daily basis. The ability to communicate is something most people take for granted. To be 11, 12 and 13 without a way to express the way you are feeling or the things you need can become extremely frustrating and hinder a desire for learning. Help me engage my students, build communication and spark their interest in learning.
