Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have a difficult time staying engaged in their books, however we have found the key! Mystery Books! Most of my students are below if not far below their reading level. These books will help my students stay engaged which will help them reach their desired reading level.

My students are a great group of kids however they struggle academically.

Most of them are second language learners who are struggling to learn English. They do not get much help at home with their work because many of the parents do not read or write English themselves. When they come to school they are ready to learn and willing to put the work in. However the subject they struggle most in is the one subject they need the most, reading! Trying to keep them engaged is difficult however recently we have discovered their love of mystery book! They are engaged when they are reading them and they want to read more. There is one small problem, books! Our school is located in a very needy area and so trying to find class sets of mystery books in nearly impossible!

My Project

Chasing Vermeer, The Calder Game Blue Balliet, and Wright 3 will greatly benefit my students. It will allow us to read as a class. It will also allow my students to develop their critical thinking skills through class conversation. With every student reading the same book they will be able to discuss what is happening and what they think might happen next. It also allows them to think and prove their thinking. These books will also extend themselves to writing. The students can take what they have learned from the mystery books that they will be reading and they will be able to write their own mysteries.

The donations made to their project will impact my students and our classroom greatly.

These kids love new books and it makes them feel empowered when they have new books to read. These books will also make a huge impact because the more they read the greater their reading skills and the greater their reading skills the better they will become at reading. Please help these students improve their reading and become life long lovers of books!
