My Students

I teach high school physical science, marine science, and biology. To engage the students, I try to offer as many different kinds of activities as possible. In our remote area, we benefit from visual activities which can "take us there." We can do this with film.

Our school community is a rural public high school in Hawaii.

Many of my students have mild and moderate disabilities. We are in a high poverty area with many students qualifying for free lunch. Many live with single parents, relatives, or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright and many aspire to go to college.

My Project

These DVDs will supplement our science classes and allow my students to see people and places we cannot in the isolated, rural area where we live. My students are very visual learners and these kinds of activities can have a huge positive impact on learning by increasing interest and retention. I want my students to learn more about our world, and in particular the problems facing our environment such as global warming, and possible solutions such as alternative energy. These are important issues they will need to be educated about for their adult lives.

Students need to have exposure to science issues that will impact their lives now and in the future.

One way I can do this is to tap into their visual learning style with films that present these environmental issues in an engaging way. Thank you for your help!
