My Students

The first thing my students ask when I come to their classroom is, "are we going outside today?" From kindergarten to fifth grade, our students are excited to learn and explore in the school gardens, in the park, and at the creek. They don't all start out this enthusiastic, however. Many don't have a lot of experience in being in natural environments. Building confidence and the love of nature is a skill that grows over time.

If our students learn to love and value the natural spaces around them, they will be more likely to want to protect them as adults.

In their time at our school, students become knowledgeable about the environment around them, brave in challenging circumstances, and empathetic towards the living things they encounter. I am so proud of the students who graduate from our school because I know they will be good advocates for the environment in the future.

My Project

Younger students will benefit from the animal models and track stamps as they explore what stories tracks can tell. Matching games help with identification and sorting by attributes. Older students will finally get to dissect owl pellets as part of their exploration of food chains and biodiversity. All students will benefit from nature STEM sets. These bring together science and engineering practices with natural materials to practice solving real-world environmental challenges. With a curriculum full of engaging environmental STEM challenges, students can explore the impacts humans have on the environment and develop ways to solve them.

We can't go outside all the time, unfortunately, so this project will help bring nature indoors.

Winter temperatures, snow, rain and other unexpected circumstances can bring us inside. This project will help drive students' love and excitement for the natural world even if they can't be in it.
