Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students have never had an art class. They are afraid of art but with Ceramics... Clay = Play.
Because clay feels nonthreatening, they are willing to work with it and learn from their experiences and mistakes.
Clay is very forgiving and they enjoy it.
My students come from all different backgrounds but clay brings them together. They learn how to help each other out and we've created a safe learning environment in which they can be creative and silly.
My Project
You can imagine that it has been very tough to teach Ceramics virtually during the pandemic. Many Ceramics teachers have decided to avoid clay during this time but not me. I decided that since most (if not all) of my student CHOSE to be in a Ceramics class, that they deserved a CHANCE to work with clay. I made individual kits so students can work from home with the basics. Since our art budget is small, there wasn't much left over for glazes.
My students need colorful glazes to help brighten up their ceramic creations, make their functional wares food safe and give them joy during this tough time.
This is my second project proposal to get enough low fire glazes to get us through the end of the school year (whether we are virtual, face to face, or hybrid). With your help, this project will provide students with the gloss glazes they need to add a bit of color and cheer and turn their hard work into something they can be proud of!!
