Help Mr. N.

I teach Biology I and Biology II to an extremely charismatic group of 9-12 graders in rural Mississippi. The school is located in a "critical needs area" and 99 percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch.

While our school offers textbooks for most of the students, many resources that help bridge the gap between abstract ideas and meaningful representations are either outdated or missing entirely. This fact is especially hindering in a subject enriched greatly by hands on labs and activities. It is one thing to examine pictures and memorize text, and quite another to explore written concepts with your own two hands. Given access to resources that would allow for such exploration would aid students in progressing from simple recall to a firmly rooted understanding of scientific principles and concepts.

In all of my classes, I teach in depth units on the skeletal system, muscular system, and general body mechanics. My students always seem to enjoy each of the units despite my inability to provide them with visual resources beyond pictures. My students take a sincere interest in learning about their bodies and would benefit greatly from a richer, more hands on experience during my anatomy unit. One way this could be accomplished is through a classroom skeleton. A full size skeleton would not only serve as an excellent supplement for the skeletal system, but also work as a constant reference for the muscular system, body mechanics, and any other topic related to the human body. My belief is that with the chance to manipulate and examine a full size skeleton, the students will significantly strengthen their textual knowledge concerning the human body.

As a donor for this project, you can take pride in the fact that you helped students receive the experience they deserve in a science course. In a subject area grounded in inquiry and exploration, it is only right that students are given the opportunity to explore and inquire. A classroom skeleton is also a resource that will be with the school a very long time. This is not a resource that will be exhausted in 1,2,3, or even 10 years. Thank you for you consideration!
