Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Most of my students have never traveled beyond the limits of their neighborhood! With financial and transportation constraints, many of them are restricted to a neighborhood that lacks cultural and educational institutions like museums and galleries. Along with my efforts to expand the art program at their school, I thought it would be beneficial to open their eyes (and worlds) with a trip to the Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois.
My students can learn more about their history as a people, since most of them are transplanted from Mexico, as well as expand their cultural understanding of the talents and traditions that come from their homeland.
We are a Milwaukee Public School that works with 95% students of color, catering to a predominantly Latino/a population. 90% of our students come from a low income household within the surrounding neighborhood. Our greater mission is to graduate all students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life.
My Project
Through December, the Museum of Mexican Art will be hosting an exhibition based on the important Mexican celebration of Dia De Los Muertos.
By visiting this exhibition, my students will have the great benefit of gaining a deeper connection to their culture and its traditions, as well as learn about their history.
The students will learn about the history of this celebration within Mexico as well as here, in the United States, and how this celebration has evolved over the years.
Beyond this exhibition, the museum is an excellent advocate of Mexican American art with an extensive collection of spiritual and politically rich artworks for my young, impressionable students to learn from.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
