My 9th grade girls are amazing. I teach 100 students at an all-girls public charter school in Wilmington, NC. The thing I love most about my students is that they are so energetic, passionate, and curious about the world. They constantly surprise me with their insights and the varying perspectives they bring to the table.
While we have students from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, many of our girls are considered "at-risk" and bravely face difficult challenges outside of school.
In order to help our girls overcome these challenges, we focus on educating the "whole girl," meaning that we constantly try to help our girls grow socially and emotionally, as well as academically, and we place a strong emphasis on community and sisterhood.
Our girls are future leaders and I want to do everything I can to empower them to interact critically with the world around them and speak their minds effectively.
My Project
One of the biggest barriers students who are struggling readers face in English courses is a lack of books that are relatable and engaging. For this reason, many students simply "check out" and don't even attempt to engage in the critical reading process that is such a key skill for success in today's world.
Children of Blood and Bone is an amazing read that explores powerful female characters and social issues that are relevant to the world we live in, as well as magic and adventure that keep readers on the edge of their seats.
I know my girls will love reading this book and that we will be able to dive into all of our required reading and writing standards in an engaging way through studying this novel. I picture us having a higher level of engagement in reading, conducting deep character analysis, and participating in seminar discussions that allow us to make connections to today's society. Thanks so much for taking the time to consider this project.
