My Students

"The more you read, the more you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" said Dr. Seuss. I want to support literacy learning in my special education classroom so that my students love to read more than ever and can acquire the reading skills they need to go many places!

My students range from Kindergarten to 4th grade.

I work with a variety of students with disabilities and each child has unique learning needs. No matter their current skill level, however, each child comes to my classroom ready to learn. I can see their eager desire to learn as they strive to read books far above their reading level. In our school, I am lucky to work together with their wonderful regular teachers to ensure that every student is receiving the best supports they can, across environments. We truly have a community of learners from staff to students, and we are looking forward to having more literacy resources to increase our success and meet our reading goals!

My Project

Our students will use these tools to build their literacy skills during small groups and centers, from the bottom up. Because of our diverse skill level, some students are working to acquire their letter sounds, while others while others are working to read longer passages with more feeling and accuracy. The tools will help them build those skills up - from letters to words to passages - as we work to bridge their gaps in learning.

Because I am a new teacher in a rural district, my students have limited supplies to work with and new materials are difficult to access due to financial and geographic reasons.

My students are currently content with the few games and materials that I have, in the beginning of the year, but as their skill level increases and the time passes, these activities will grow old quickly and become far too simple for my students. Having new materials will ensure a fun and productive time!
