As a special education inclusion teacher at a diverse urban school, I work hard to provide students with the tools they need to be successful and self-confident in their general education classrooms and in the greater community. They blossom as a result of the high expectations and adequate supports we provide. One of the most important ways I support students, many of whom are learning disabled or dyslexic, is to provide them with books on tape.
Books on tape have improved many of my students' fluency and comprehension, and have led them to view reading as fun and engaging, rather than frustrating and tedious. Many general education and limited English proficient students also have benefited from these tapes.
Unfortunately (or fortunately!), my eager students have nearly exhausted my supply of books on tape! I would love to be able to supply them with a new set of books on tape. I know that it will spark renewed excitement in reading, and further boost their self-confidence.
I am asking for funds to supplement my listening library, along with batteries to power the cassette players. These materials will benefit not only the 17 students on my caseload, but also will be available for limited English proficient and other struggling readers in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades (roughly estimated at 60 students) at our school.
