Do you want to help facilitate reading in a first grade classroom? I teach twenty, 5-6 year old children in first grade, in sunny CA. I teach everything from reading, writing, and arithmetic, to social behavior. I teach at a Title I school which means that we have a high percentage of poor children and get assistance to ensure that those students meet the challenging state curriculum standards.

Picture this; It's time for literacy centers and you get to choose which station to go to. The listening center is your heart's desire. You go to the basket of book sets and realize you have heard every book available. Your heart is saddened, but you choose to listen to one of your favorites again, only to find that the one CD player with headphones is already in use and those students didn't choose the book you want to hear.

Listening to audio books and being able to follow along in the text is a HUGE support for teaching reading. While listening to a book on CD, my first graders hear the fluency and intonation a good reader uses with the benefit of seeing the words and hearing them simultaneously. They can be introduced to new vocabulary and hear the correct pronunciations. Individual CD players allow the students to navigate and control their own learning. They can pause and re-read the text, check their understanding, or repeat a word on their own. Student choice is a big motivator in learning to read too. When you are assigned reading, is it interesting to you? Or is it more meaningful when you get to choose the book? First graders value the choice and that makes their learning more meaningful and concrete.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have a variety of books to choose from, and be able to control and monitor their own learning, an invaluable contribution to facilitating reading in my classroom.
