Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the 2017-2018 school year I have had the pleasure of getting to know 50 diverse first graders. In a school that serves Pre-K through 4th grade it is great to see the school community as an inviting and warm place where students look forward to attending. Every morning their faces light up with joy and excitement when entering their Spanish class.

Some of my students are learners of a new language (Spanish), bilingual or only speak Spanish however all are: eager to learn, curious and creative.

By infusing my love for Spanish in the classroom throughout the day through various songs and books I am hopeful to inspire my students to fall in love with the language.

My Project

These Spanish chapter books will make a HUGE difference in my students' learning by validating their importance of being in a dual language classroom learning Spanish. It is heart breaking to hear "Ms. Grande but I read all the I, J, K, L books in those bins. Do you have any more?" My students eagerness to dive into Spanish books is always amazing to see but when limited resources make it hard to keep their eagerness ignited it is upsetting.

Showing my students that there are Spanish chapter books out there that are just as funny, interesting, and relatable like their English chapter books will improve their love for reading in Spanish.
