My Students

My 1st graders read more books than the 7th graders!! At our school, each child has the opportunity to read books and then take a reading comprehension quiz on the computer (Accelerated Reader). My first graders have read and taken more quizzes than the 7th graders... so far...

I have a class of the most amazing, sweetest, and loving first graders.

They attend a charter school in Ohio. They come from families that have very little. Most receive free/reduced breakfast and lunch. Some students come to school hungry. Some come to school without hats and gloves in the winter. A lot of students wear the same shirt all week long or they wear clothes that don't fit them because that is all they have. I've given out food when they are hungry, hats and gloves when it's cold, and a hug whenever they need it.

My Project

The most important thing that I want these students to learn is that reading is a crucial part of their education. I have a nice selection of books for them to choose from during silent reading. They take this time to read books and then take a reading comprehension quiz on the computer. Currently, my first graders have passed more quizzes than the 7th graders! I don't know who long that will last though - the 7th graders weren't too happy about it! Lately, I've been stopping at the library to get books to supplement the books in my classroom. The students get so excited when they have new books to choose from! With that said, I need your help to get new, exciting books for our classroom library. That way, the students will surely CONTINUE to read more books than the 7th graders!

Reading is crucial.

It warms my heart to see my students reading a book because they WANT to and not because they HAVE to. Please help me provide my students with new, interesting, and fun books so they will continue to LOVE to read... and will continue to beat those 7th graders!
