This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Moving can be exciting, but the language barrier is a big part of the culture shock my students experience once they start their high school education here in the United States. I am amazed with the receptiveness and growth I am met with when I implement my tried and true primary strategies with my ESOL students. The primary (pun intended!) way I plan on elevating these strategies this year is through the use of podcasting.

Bridging the language barrier with storytelling through podcasting is my goal this school year and the sole reason behind why I am advocating for these materials for my ESOL high school students.

When learning a language, it is very difficult to comprehend complex textbook ideas and lessons unless they are presented and broken down into doable chunks using ESOL strategies. This is achieved with interactive lessons and loads of meaningful conversation. My plan is to create a podcasting corner in my classroom to create curated audio assignments alongside my students. Lysol wipes, Kleenex tissues, Rode microphones, an audio production system and a sprinkle of creativity can go far!

The idea behind the selection of these items is to create and host carefully crafted interviews as well as audio lessons for home-learning and differentiated instruction. It's difficult for some of the low income household students to purchase all of these supplies so I like to expose my students to as many resources and technologies that I can get my hands on. My students have a better chance of choosing a career path that fits their acquired skill-sets. The acquisition of these skills starts at school. I know that my students will feel welcomed and included during their time in my class and make good use of these resources!
