Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students learn chemistry by DOING chemistry labs! Chemistry labs enable students to investigate the world of chemistry that surrounds us. And in order for these chemistry labs to be possible, students need many basic equipment items, such as hot plates, which my school lacks.

My school is the only charter school in Massachusetts that actively recruits and graduates older, disconnected, and under-served adolescents; and challenges them with rigorous, college-preparatory academics and a strong school culture grounded in high expectations.

Our student body typically includes students who are 2-3 grade levels behind, who have previously dropped out of school, who are from immigrant or refugee families, who are parents or are pregnant, or who are English Language Learners. What unites this diverse population, is that ALL of these students are talented and are capable of achieving both academic and personal success.

My Project

Hot plates are indispensable tools that are essential to any chemistry laboratory. These hot plates would introduce students to the concept of heat, and how heat affects chemical reactions and the dissociation of ions in solution. Nearly all introductory chemistry experiments require the ability to apply a controlled amount of heat to solutions.

Many of my students are several grade levels behind in skill levels, and therefore they do not have a single second of instructional time to waste!

Without enough laboratory equipment, students have to wait in lines to use the few classroom materials that we do have. Having enough hot plates will eliminate this wait time, thereby making every second of class time both valuable and efficient.
