My Students

The majority of my students are English language learners and come from immigrant families. They are from an economically disadvantaged area in Los Angeles County. Due to their economic hardships, many of them have to work and fulfill other responsibilities at home in order to help their families.

Nonetheless, they are eager learners who work hard to be leaders in their community.

They aim to be the first in their families to go to college and graduate despite their hardships.

My Project

For the upcoming school year, I want to raise the rigor in my classroom and have my students engage in an inquiry-based learning environment in my chemistry class. We will start off the year with thermochemistry so that they can relate what they see in the world to chemistry. But to be truly inquiry-based, my classroom will need the supplies listed. The hot plate, thermometers, and chemicals will allow students to organically learn about how temperature can change reaction rates and then manipulate the chemical reactions as they desire. They will be using the pipettes to learn how concentration of chemicals can affect the reaction rate as well.

Most importantly, having these materials will give my students an opportunity to feel like real scientists and become better engaged in class.

By having a chance to do hands-on activities, students' learning is enhanced, and hopefully, they will want to pursue careers in the field of science.
