About My Students

Brooklyn International High School serves 350 newly immigrated and refugee students. These highly motivated English Language Learners come from 20 different countries. Through the tools of project-based service-learning, they strengthen their academic skills needed for college and career readiness.

The senior class at Brooklyn International has been investigating nutrition problems in our community through an interdisciplinary project culminating in a service. In government class students are reading Chew on This, by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson and conducting research on the role of government in regulating the fast food industry; in math class they are examining their BMI function and analyzing obesity statistics; and in physics and English classes students are building Rube Goldberg public service announcements. The goal of each class is for students to deeply research issues of wellness and then use the evidence from each class to persuade their community to make healthier choices. Students are working collaboratively on each aspect of the project to exhibit their work at the annual Brooklyn International High School Arts Expo. It has been very exciting to see students investigate a problem and devise a real world solution that will help contribute to their communities.

"Our project is about students should bring their own lunch to school because it is healthier and nutritious. Reading a book, Chew on This, by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson and doing some research, we have found out that the food that is cooked at home is much healthier than the food that we eat outside. School lunches are somehow healthier than fast food restaurant’s food. However, we have seen that many students waste food because it doesn't taste good as they expected and they ended up buying outside food which is an unhealthy choice. Therefore, our group decided to teach students by making a Rube Goldberg Machine and adding a public service announcement to show the importance of making good choices by cooking at home. We will exhibit our machine during our school's Arts Expo to teach students, teachers and parents about healthy food choices and why it is better to bring your lunch. After the Expo finishes, we would like to have microwaves to inspire them to cook at home.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to have four microwaves and four stands for our students to be able to use in school. This does not sound like a lot, but by only having four microwaves available to students can influence them to bring healthy, tasty home cooked meals celebrating each student's diversity. Instead of eating frozen pizza in the cafeteria, students will be enjoying food prepared by them or their parents made with love. With your help, we will be able to have healthier students ready and eager to learn.

Most of the students in our school are new immigrants to America, so they are used to eating their own country’s foods and hot foods. We will put microwaves in the room next to the cafeteria, so at lunch time the students can heat up their own homemade healthy lunch daily. In addition, many of our students attend after school programs such as College Now, which requires staying at school past dinner time. With a microwave they will be able to stay later in school, not be hungry, and learn."
