Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Every year I take a student introduction survey and I look forward to reading each students' response to the question: "What do you want to do most this year in science class?" And, each and EVERY single year (without fail) the overwhelming response is, "Dissect something"! This year, I want to make my students' wishes a reality - I want to give them the opportunity to see first hand what a heart looks like - to explore the intricate valve system, see the various chambers and feel like they are in a "real" science classroom and laboratory. For many of my students, entering our 7th grade science classroom is their first exposure to the fascinating world of science - and their first time studying the human body systems. What better way to learn about the wonders of their own circulatory system (and the organ that helps gives us our internal beat) than to explore first hand through the excitement of their first dissection. One of the Connecticut 7th grade learning standards is to identify and describe the parts of the human heart and circulatory system. Dissecting a pig heart will give both my tactile and visual learners the opportunity to touch and see an organ that up until this point, has no dimension outside of the colored picture in a text book and the internal beat they can feel in their own bodies. In order to do this project, I would need a classroom set of basic dissection kits and trays and well as enough hearts for all of my students. This would be an incredibly exciting opportunity for my class - giving them the first hand laboratory experience they are all yearn to have. I just know for certain that this will help excite students about science and allow them to experience the wonders of introductory dissection.
