My Students

My students are simply amazing! These last few years I have really been blessed to work with such fun personalities! Our students live in rural Indiana and come from three small communities. We are comprised of transfer students from nearby towns as well. Our students are very different in the fact that they are very economically diverse in this area.

Many say it takes a special person to work with middle schoolers.

You either love it or hate it. I can tell you I have now been working with middle schoolers for longer than I taught elementary students and I do not ever see myself going back! My students are fun, energetic, have a sense of humor, are still just kids, and love physical education! This week during College Go Spirit Week many dressed up as me with sweats, whistles, and name badges for "Dress as your Favorite Teacher!" There is no bigger compliment than that!

My Project

Heart Healthy Huskies is in need of more heart rate monitors so all students will be able to wear one during their physical education class. This type of technology is only effective if the students are one-to-one with it so they can see their personal results. The students will have their own bands to wear and we have iPads that work with the software system. The heart rate monitors will come with a lifetime license and a "bridge" which talks to the iPad and the monitors. This technology works in the gym/school where we have WiFi access, but it also stores data if we take our students outside and will transfer the data once we get back inside the school.

The purpose of this project is to engage and motivate all students.

We will see increased participation, activity time, and heart rates from the instant feedback the students receive throughout the class. We are integrating technology into our physical education class while moving and having fun.

We have a few objectives to meet while using heart rate monitors. First, we want our students to spend at least 50% of the class in Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA). This will get their heart rates up during activity time thus achieving maximal benefits from exercise to help make their hearts healthier! Second, we are team players in our building. It has been proven that exercise and physical activity lead to academic achievement. It is our hope that when students work harder in our class, then it will flow over into their other core classes. Students will be more awake, have better concentration since more oxygen is flowing through their brain, and they will be able to sit still and focus on learning new material.
