My Students

If you have been in a classroom lately you will have seen a big white board on the wall. This is a "smart" board, that we can hook to Internet and travel the world in our classroom. I get to spend my day with children who are identified as special needs.

As part of our school wide curriculum, each grade "adopts" a country to study.

Since my kids are in grades 3-8 we took on the world!. I want to access my smart board with the Internet so we can visit our countries to see the geography, culture, people, and have a better understanding of what is going on outside our little community. First a little about us, we are located in southeastern North Carolina, our county is totally dependent upon agriculture for it's economy, we are the largest hog producer in the USA! My kids range in grade level from 3rd to 8th, with functioning levels of Pre-K to 4/5th grade. All of my students have been identified as having a developmental issue or learning issues. I have children who are autistic, deaf, multi-handicapped and considered mentally delayed.

My Project

But, this does not mean we can't learn and enjoy hearing, reading and tasting other cultures! This is where I need the donors to help me. I need a portable cart that I can set up my laptop on for the smart board,so at social studies time, we can "travel" to Germany and eat soft pretzels, and see what that country is all about. We already went to Australia, and looked at the "Roos" on a desktop computer, but the smart board would allow everybody to see the pictures at once. I also like to share music with my students, as we were reading about Germany the books talked about composers and the kids were curious about the music. I have a big personal collection of classical music and want to share that with my kids as well. Of course the smart board will be used for all of our other studies and the cd player will allow us to "read" books on cd.

Yes, my kids may not go on to be CEO's or business owners, but they do deserve all the opportunities and chances to learn about more than the small communities we live in.
