My Students

Have you ever thought you heard something, but it went by so quickly, you were left wondering if you in fact heard what you thought? My band students have this issue in rehearsals or concerts. It would be great to have a digital recorder to listen to minor things that ordinarily might get unnoticed.

My students are awesome!

They are very dedicated students and work hard all year to achieve musical excellence. The school they attend has a diverse demographic. In our area of Florida, it is very rural. Students do not have much to do outside of school activities and sports. Therefore, the students focus a ton of energy into perfecting their instruments and music learned in school. Many students are naturally talented, but most learn everything they know about music in band class. My students are always very well behaved and very mature for their grade levels. Students have also shown improvement on tests in their academics. My students have said many times that without band, their day would not be the same.

My Project

Having a digital audio recorder will allow my students to review their performances, as well as adjust and fix even the smallest of mistakes. When academic classes take quizzes, it usually leads up to a unit test. When the band has a rehearsal, that is their quiz. The difference is the quiz gives you instant results that can be seen by the students. A rehearsal can have results, but only in a hearsay objective point of view from the director. I give plenty of feedback to students throughout a rehearsal. Our unit test is our performances for audiences. They receive instant feedback from their families and friends, as well as myself, but nothing they can review later, unless they have a recording they can review and/or critique. By having a digital audio recorder available in the band room, students will be able to use more critical ears about their sound and the whole band's sound. These students deserve instant feedback and the technology to make that possible.

Donations for this project will make a huge impact on the daily sound of my students.

Since they are in a much different type of classroom environment then the rest of their classes, it is important that they have all the resources ready to them each day. Students will begin to understand a general good tone, rhythmic accuracy and ensemble sonority if they were able to hear the band's hard work and progress made throughout the year.
