We, teachers, know that any academic standard proves challenging to master for many students in any good school year. My students are ready to learn, but their energy and focus needs a little fine-tuning. Since most students don't have access to reliable reading materials at home, their ability to enrich and strengthen their critical thinking skills at school is a cool way to learn!
My students will experience the ease of writing a research paper and designing of a hands-on book report by reading about important people in our lives through quality biographical novels.
They begin a school year hardly able to read a full chapter book, yet they finish the year with a developed appreciation of literature genres and a love for reading for pleasure both at school and home. My 6th grade students will be assigned a biographical novel. They will read the book and use additional interent resouces to develop a bibliography, outline, rough draft, and finally a typed final draft of a research paper. They will also create a visual arts report using the copy paper, yarn, and plant stems as binders to make a self-made book. Finally, the student's will present their book reports to the class as a summative grade. Ultimately, empowering students to be better readers and writers with critical thinking skills is a win-win solution for all students in the classroom.
