My Students

Curious, inquisitive, and interested in the world around them. This is how I describe my second graders and our daily learning climate.

My students are always eager to tackle any learning challenge presented.

We have a little bit of every type of personality in our classroom and we are a group that celebrates our differences and grows from learning with each other on a daily basis. There is a bond that develops when you experience new, exciting things. I strive for my classroom to be the community that fosters that bonding between the students and myself while instilling a foundation for a lifetime of learning.

My Project

Second graders are interested in the world around them. Children hear adults talking, hear news reports, or see headlines on materials in their community and they want to know more. It is my job as an educator to provide the skills and materials for students to build upon their questions and observations.

Scholastic News is an excellent resource to do exactly that.

Scholastic News is delivered to our classroom and each student gets their very own copy of the newspaper to read. The content in each Scholastic News issue is geared specifically to second graders and written in an engaging manner.

Each Scholastic News issue is also available online with a classroom subscription. I love that students can access the material electronically and have it read TO them. The online issue also allows for students to interact with the material by drawing, highlighting, and even applying sticky notes electronically. All of these are excellent skills to introduce to second graders.

A subscription to Scholastic News will allow my second graders to learn about current events in a highly engaging way. They will also be able to use their newspapers to research and collaborate with their peers on issues that pertain to the world around them better preparing them for the future.
