This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine never having the opportunity to go beyond your neighborhood. This is what most of my students experience. I believe that though they do not get to fully experience the world beyond their neighborhoods reading about current news and places unseen will spark an interest in each of them.

My third grade students attend an inner-city bilingual school.

The children come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Approximately one-fourth of the children are Hispanic and one-half are African-American. Many do not have books or magazines readily available for them at home. They are eager to learn. However, they face many challenges in their lives at this early age of 8-9 years old.

My Project

Time for Kids and Weekly Reader News magazines will encourage my students to learn more about the world around them in a fun and interesting way. These weekly magazines will give my students real life events and help the children strengthen their nonfiction reading skills. These weekly magazines will also tie into the State Standards for both Reading and Social Studies which we will be covering in my third grade classroom. It is my hope that both Time for Kids and Weekly Reader News magazines will encourage my students to become better and stronger readers. The magazines will spark an interest in my students to learn more about the wonderful world around them.

Time for Kids and Weekly Reader News magazines will help my students to build their nonfiction literacy skills.

The exciting and current events will educate my students about the world around them. It is my hope that by learning about many diverse places and topics my students will continue to grow in their curiosity about these interesting places and topics which they will read about each week.
