This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school serves an inner city, high poverty, bilingual student population. My students face many challenges in and out of the classroom on a daily basis. My goal in the classroom is to create interactive, hands-on activities to motivate them and keep them engaged with the content.
Through my lessons and the relationships I build with my students, I hope to motivate them to become lifelong learners.
Despite the cultural differences my students and I share, we have built a strong community in my classroom based on respect and understanding. My students may face hardships outside of school, but they know that our classroom will always be a safe place for them.
My Project
My middle school students are avid readers. On our biweekly trips to the local public library, my students come back to class with an armful of books. However, our required classroom textbook is full of dull and outdated stories.
I want to show my students that our classroom curriculum can be as fun and engaging as the books they choose at the library.
I have selected three books to add to our literature circles for this project. Literature circles give the students a chance to choose what they read within the curriculum. Working in groups of 3-5, students read and collaborate to prepare materials for our weekly discussions on their books. Literature circles give my students a chance to work together to successfully achieve a reading goal.
