Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." Famous author Aldous Huxley understood the importance of music as a learning tool that helps individuals in various ways. Incorporating music into the classroom is essential in many facets of a students life.

My student's are located in an urban neighborhood in Southern California.

Their school and neighborhood is primarily Latino where the vast majority of students come from low income families. Each and every single day is a struggle for my students as they attempt to juggle school and overcome the difficulties of their surroundings. My first graders are filled with a tremendous amount of energy that is often times difficult to utilize while they are learning to spell or solve math problems. Their neighborhood makes the simple joy of playing outside dangerous due to gang violence and inaccessible due to a completely urbanized environment. This inability to socialize with fellow students and lack of artistically physical expression is ultimately detrimental to these students' development.

My Project

A student's ability to listen is an incredibly important skill that must be honed and nurtured at a young age. Music is an excellent way for students to build superior listening skills in a way that they will enjoy themselves. Each of the requested items will exercise the power of listening in various ways within the classroom. My student's participate in bi-weekly mixing group time with students from other classrooms as a way to encourage camaraderie. I am in charge of the dance portion. The students love to dance and having this potable music system will allow us to express ourselves outside as opposed to being confined indoors. The speakers will allow me to use innovative and interactive computer programs to help students learn math through answering problems posed by animated characters. The listening center will let the students read and become familiar with the proper way to pronounce words that would otherwise be difficult. Thus, each item will help the students greatly.

The requested items will help the students become readers.

It will give them an opportunity to play outside with other students. They will be able to be active in an expressive manner. It will help the students learn mathematics in a technological format which is an enjoyable for youth to learn. There is a distinct difference between simply hearing a lesson and actually listening. Each of these items will have students listening and will allow them to be critical thinkers in the future.
