Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was in school, music was my favorite subject. I especially loved that in my school we would perform full Gilbert and Sullivan operas every year! This is an opportunity I am bringing to my students.

My students all come from low socioeconomic homes.

This alone gives them limited opportunities. Add that to all the constant budget cuts schools are facing today, and enrichment opportunities are just unavailable. I am trying to change that. While we have an amazing art teacher who does so much with them, we do not have a music or performance program. Last year I brought that to an end. With our art teachers help, my 4th grade class performed Pirates of Penzance. It was amazing! The class had so much learning the songs and bringing it to life on stage, and the entire school was exposed to their first opera!

My Project

While the experience was absolutely amazing, there was one slight problem. You couldn't hear the students! Because we do not have a band, in order to hear the music we had to play the opera from a CD. The audience got to hear the opera and watch it perform, but they only heard the original singers, not my students. This year we will be performing The Mikado, also by Gilbert and Sullivan, and I am asking for an overhead microphone that will capture my students voices so we hear THEM over the singers. I want all of my students to shine while putting on the show.

The Mikado is a great opera, and no matter what my students and my school will gain from the performance.
