Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
We are a border town with Mexico and have a Marine base. Our school is the school for the kids who live on the Marine Base. We also have many migrant children who attend our school. We are not on the outskirts of town, but we are neither in the center. Many, many of our students live in trailers, and many with extended family members. We also have some students who are from high socioeconomic homes. About 60 percent of our students are English language learners or dual language.
We are very excited about the learning that is going on this year!
We are departmentalizing and switching classrooms for each subject. We are experiencing many fun activities. We all have iPads and love working on them and using paper and pencils. The year started out great, and we are sure we will continue in that direction.
My Project
With large classes in this technology-literate world, much of the interaction needs to be individual so as not to disturb others. Most of the students do not have earphones or if they did bring earbuds to school, they were cheap and have since quit working. With a set that I can lend students, students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand and not whether their materials are going to work or not.
It is unrealistic to believe that we can purchase everything our students need without help from the outside.
With the help of donors, my job becomes easier because my students will have what they need to be successful. Pencils may not seem like a large item, but when students do not have a pencil and you are able to give them one that makes their academic successes more prevalent. Also, we need colored pencils. We are an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school, and we do a lot of drawing sketches to help with understanding. Many students do not have colored pencils to aid in this task. With a supply of colored pencils, students will be able to show their creativity through art.
