My Students

My students need a forum in which they can openly express themselves and receive positive feedback from peers.

24 bright and eager students have helped me put together blueprints for a school podcast.

My students attend a high school for youth with special needs in Brooklyn, NY. They have a great desire to express themselves but are very limited in their written and verbal expression.

My Project

We have requested two MXL 990 microphones, 2 mic stands, 2 pop filters, and a USB interface. Used together, these resources will allow us to set up a recording studio in which students will develop their own podcast. They have already begun planning elements of the show, including a news segment, staff interview spotlight, and peer opinion pieces. The students will be in charge of different elements of production - allowing them to practice skills such as organization, collaboration and problem solving. Ultimately, they will be establishing a mode of expression for themselves in the school in which they have agency and can practice taking various roles of responsibility.

The main reason that this project is so important is that it will allow the students to have a voice in the school.

They will be in charge of production and planning and it will give them a means of expression that is not limited to pencil and paper.
