I'm requesting funding for wellness, social-emotional learning, and yoga training. I teach secondary students with special needs. Many of my students need explicit strategies to regulate their emotions. The majority of my students do not qualify for psychological counseling services per their Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs). For this reason, I use interventions to help students identify triggers and self-monitor sabotaging behaviors. This data helps with identifying positive responses and behavioral alternatives. While students benefit from such strategies, I would like to advance my skills to help students find proactive and internal measures to regulate their emotions. As it stands, many of my students are struggling emotionally, which is leading to below average academic performance and discipline infractions.
The ultimate goal is to build my skillset to help students maintain a calm within, be self-aware, and make decisions that enhance and benefit their lives.
Yoga, social-emotional, and wellness practices could transform the lives of my students. What's better than feeling in control of your mind, body, soul, and destiny? If my students learn to master their emotions, they will be more mindful and resilient. This will increase their chances of having promising life outcomes. In the spirit of holistic well-being, cultivating my skills in the areas of wellness, social-emotional learning, and yoga will increase my emotional intelligence and mental fortitude, which will directly contribute to shaping healthier students and school practices.
