This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of our students come from low-income households and do not have access to life essentials such as hygiene products and food. Because America's racial and ethnic minorities are the fastest-growing sectors in the country and they make up a disproportionately large segment of the economically poor population, tending to their educational needs is in everyone's interest. The level of their educational achievements will dramatically affect the future of our nation.

Our students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress.

I work at the Wellness Center, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.

My experience with DonorsChoose.org and sponsors has been very positive and I hope to continue using this site as a bridge between my students and those out there who would like to be part of this amazing opportunity that takes place every day in our class.

My Project

We all want to feel good about ourselves by having good personal hygiene. However, not all students have equal access to items such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes or lotion. These are things that many of us take for granted. However, think about the kid that doesn't have access to deodorant and has to sit in class next to his or her peers. There are many different reasons why my students face problems such as these: no running water at home, no money for "luxuries" like these, or no one at home as taken the time to teach them how to have personal hygiene.

Hygiene kits will inspire our students to actively participate in building positive hygiene habits.

Hygiene kits will include deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, and body wash for students to take. Additionally, these kits will help students who are new to the country learn about our cultural norms. Students will be given the opportunity to get hygiene kits throughout the school year and will develop healthy habits which lead to better self-esteem and self-worth!
