My Students

My name is Marie Angela Cajou and I am a French language teacher. Our school became a Title I school again this year. It offers after school programs that support the students learning of a new language. The after school programs run from 2:35-4:00 every day. Often times the students come without eating a snack. Even when the school was not a Title I school, there were students who would come to schools counting on the foods that the school offers. Besides the hunger problem, they are very creative students with a lot of energy and enthusiasm for after school activities. They enjoy after school programs because they foster their creativity and individuality.

I believe for students to learn they need to have a full belly.

My Project

This year I am teaching French cinema on Fridays from 2:35-4:00 and Haitian creole language for beginners on Thursdays from 2:35-4:00 every week. The students are usually eager to participate in after school activities; however the need to eat can force them to skip after school activities and go home early.

I personally know students for whom food is very scarce at home, so asking them to stay in after school activities , and not provide them something to eat after a long day of school makes it hard for them to remain focused and engaged.

Often times some of them do not eat the foods that the cafeteria offers because of allergies or they are vegetarian or vegans. I am truly hoping that my project will be founded, so my students can have fun during after school without worrying about what they are going to eat.
