My Students

I'm not too sure why I didn't think of this project earlier but there is no time like the present, right? My students are having a fantastic school year so far. With winter well underway, we have encountered a bit of a breakfast hiccup. My students do not live close to our school like many of the other students in the building. Due to disabilities that impact their learning, they receive transportation services from home to school. Recent weather challenges, coupled with changes in transportation staffing, have caused students to arrive to school late. At times, they are even picked up from school later than usual. While I am excited to see them all everyday, they aren't too pleased to learn that they have missed breakfast.

Everyone could benefit from having breakfast in the morning, so why should my students be any different?

As a teacher, I can see the effects of students missing out on breakfast in the morning. For some students, this is the first meal that they are encountering for the day. Be it something small or large, they should be provided with the fuel to get the day started.

My Project

This is a project that will satisfy student hunger as well as students ability to learn when provided with a healthy meal. If it weren't for a few snacks that I have in the classroom, they would have to wait four additional hours until lunchtime. Don't get me wrong, if something happens to be leftover in the cafeteria, my students will get lucky. But with those times being few and far between, I want to be proactive! Being hungry can also bring about a change in one's emotional behavior. It can also develop headaches resulting in frustration and time spent away from important instruction. The best part is that we are going the healthy route!

My students are pretty easy going when it comes to trying out something new!

They are also easy going when trying something new involves their sense of taste! For breakfast, students are able to choose individual cereal boxes that aren't loaded with too much sugar and a Belvita breakfast bar. The variety pack of Honest Juice boxes will definitely pair well with it, especially after being chilled in our classroom refrigerator. For students who have to wait before going home, they can choose from the Baked variety of chips, graham crackers or goldfish! With only thirteen students, these goodies will get us through the last half of the school year!

I hope that you can satisfy my students need for alternative breakfast and snack options, which will continue our process of learning!
