Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to my class of bright and beautiful children! They do not require a lot, but they do deserve the best. This is something I try to give them every day. They have many sensory, social, and academic needs, and with your help we can help them build the foundational skills needed to advance.

My class is made up of six vibrant, exciting, funny, empathic, strategic, and motivated students diagnosed with autism.

Each student has individual strengths and weaknesses, but together they make an unstoppable group of students. They all participate in one of the most restrictive learning settings in New York City's District 75 schools. They are enrolled in a 6:1:1 classroom setting. The school is located in one of the highest poverty areas in New York City. The school offers students a safe and empowering environment in which to learn in an area that is surrounded by stress and deprivation. This does not stop them, though. They come to school each day ready to learn and grow.

My Project

With the materials requested, my students will have the opportunity learn some of the most basic aspects of living in a social world. This could give my students the opportunity to work on: decision making, labeling preferred items, requesting from adults and peers, classroom jobs, and participating in an every day activity with peers through instructional interventions. Their communication is limited, but they love food. Introducing an instructional snack will help them to achieve a number of IEP (individualized educational program) goals, as well as help them to generalize these skills across people and environments. A much needed refrigerator will not only help the students in my classroom, but in neighboring classrooms with teachers trying to implement a similar program. I aim to help them explore healthy snack options and experience snacks in a new way. Fresh fruit and vegetables will be part of their choices, as well. Healthy food for healthy minds.

Your donations will provide my students with choices, sensory input, and classroom accountability.

Exposing my students with a variety of snacks will address sensory needs and their desire for independence. While they have no allergies, some eat just one thing. Their parents have asked for help to get them to try a variety of food. My students deserve the opportunity to work on academics and social skills, while participating in a common childhood activity: snack. We thank you!
