I am lucky enough to work with incredibly intelligent, witty, and resilient teenagers from all over the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. My students attend six different high schools within a large high school campus in the Bronx. Unfortunately, over the past few years, student library usage had decreased.
As the new campus librarian for the 4,300+ students who share the building, my goal is to change that!
In my last school, I worked with colleagues and students to make our school library one of the most popular and welcoming spaces in the building. I'm eager to build my new-to-me campus library into a similar space, where students are excited to find out what's new, check out culturally relevant and diverse books, learn about the world around them, spend time with peers, and explore their creativity.
So far, so good!
My Project
Libraries are places where students can come to seek reliable information about topics that are important to them. Most of the students who come to my campus library on a daily basis do so of their own volition: to choose books to read independently, see and socialize with friends, and connect to the internet.
Many of the students who come to the library looking for informational texts are doing so to answer some question they may have.
These questions largely revolve around health: sexual health, mental health, personal care and well-being. While the library does have some titles that address these concerns, there are not currently enough titles covering enough topics that students face on a daily basis. This project will help to fill to provide informative health-focused books to students with questions.
