Do you think you have stress? Imagine coming to a new country as a child, sometimes alone, having missed 2 or more years of school and in many cases not able to speak the language. My kids are grades 3-12 and all have many challenges to overcome.
My students are refugees from many countries.
English is their second language. Some come to this country alone. Some come with some family. Many are in foster homes. They all come to have a second chance at getting a good education that will lead to a successful life. They are from many countries including Columbia, Africa, Nepal, Iran, Mexico, Puerto Rico for just a few examples. There are about 125 children in the school and classes are divided by age and math and English levels in grades 3-12. It is our goal to move them to main stream schools in 2-3 years.
In addition to the normal school curriculum to master, they must learn English, social skills, and many cultural adaptations. Most work very hard at school work
Our resources are limited and supplies are hard to come by.
My Project
I will give classes for them with guidance in yoga, meditation, and relaxation that will help them build skills to find mental balance, physical fitness, and peacefulness. These are life skills they can use beyond school.
The mats will be used in each class as a place for each student to stretch and pose. The music and DVD will be used for lessons.
The iPad will be used for demonstration instruction and will be tied into an available projector. Additionally, the iPad be used for further health class instruction including utilizing apps like health buddy which offers many visual health lessons that are important to this special group of children. The speaker will be used to play the yoga music. The whistle will be used for transitioning.
Refugees from many countries and are dealing with many stressors.
The materials in my cart will help them build skills for stress management and relaxation. It will help them to learn to remain calm and focus on what is important to them.
