Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students crave learning and positive attention. They want to be successful but some lack the interpersonal skills necessary to achieve both academic and social success. They want so much to do well, but sometimes struggle in how to do just that.

My amazing students are often faced with stressful situations at home including hunger, violence, or lack of parental supervision which can create poor psychosocial skills and low academic abilities.

Hands-on activities encourage a lifelong love of learning and motivate students to explore and discover new things (Bass, et al.).

Our students come from a mostly low income area and many need the school's help in providing food on the weekends. Its hard to imagine how their home lives must be, and yet they come to school every day eager for someone to love and teach them. These are the students I desperately want to reach.

My Project

Fourth and fifth grade students will be invited to participate in an after school class twice a month using “Nutrition To Grow On” curriculum. With the curriculum and guest speakers’ students will learn how to make healthy choices with the food they eat from the store, learn how to grow their own food, learn how to cook using the food they have selected to grow in the garden, and build positive peer relationships.

By using the donated greenhouse and cooktop to create an afterschool healthy living class, students will feel like they belong and matter, and gain knowledge through hands-on learning built to address science, mathematics, language arts, history, environmental studies, nutrition, and health.

We will select students who need academic tutoring and psychosocial support in 4th and 5th grade to participate in this afterschool program. We will invite nutritionists from inside and outside of our district to come talk with the students when we meet in the fall, and in the spring we will begin to cook with the produce we have grown.
