My Project

My students will benefit from growing their own gardens started in our classroom and transferred to their own homes. With long, cold, winters in Alaska students & families suffer from a lack of healthy vegetables. Being able to grow their own sprouts on their window sill at home will help students learn how to eat healthier throughout our long cold winters. Starting vegetables to grow outdoors during the summers will help them have year round food security. Students will benefit from learning about the life cycles of plants through hands-on laboratory experiences using hydroponic growing kits. These laboratory experiences will help foster excitement in students to learn real-world skills transferable to their own living at home. The students will be able to take what they learn and continue to grow vegetables at home for healthier living. Students will be able to continue growing sprouts and vegetables at home long after our classroom experiences end by using the plants started in class. Students are more likely to engage with learning if it's relevant to them, help me to bring relevance to their lives and learn all about photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and a bit of chemistry!
