Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For many of my students hydration is something that they think includes soda and sugar drinks. They consume way too much sugar each day during breakfast, lunch, and after school too. In the classroom, I allow my students to have water on their desks at all times and freely consume water. Our classroom is often hot and dry and staying hydrated is an essential part of the learning day. Through a healthy eating program I have taught my students how to read food labels to determine if food or beverages are a go, slow, or whoa food. My students know we want to consume more go foods than whoa or slow foods.

In our school building, there is lead in many of the pipes.

While it is not all of the pipes it is more than half of the building. I do not like my students to drink out of any of the water fountains due to the lead in some of the pipes. While we do have a water refilling station none of my students regularly bring their water bottles. Therefore, I always try to have a stash of single use water bottles that my students can access as needed.

At this point in the year, our supply from the beginning of the year is running out and we need to replenish. I would love to be able to have water when my students need it and continue to encourage healthy hydration.
