My Students

My students are eager learners! They are truly little sponges that love learning by doing and experimenting. Everyday we strive to learn something new and be kind to each other.

In first grade we focus on learning the foundational skills that will help foster future academic learning.

We strive to develop a mindful mindset, and strive to be upright citizens.

The students in my school all receive free breakfast and lunch, as they come from low-income families. The great majority are English language learners. With your donation, my students will have the opportunity to share in their learning with one another, and continue to develop essential skills that they carry with them for a life time!

My Project

My first grade students have been learning about the importance of healthy eating habits. They enjoyed the topic so much that they came up with an excellent idea/plan: growing their very own fruits and vegetables at school, so they can then harvest their crops and enjoy healthy snacks, as they continue to learn about nutrient dense food. As their teacher, I was thrilled when I heard about their plan. My students understand that in order to carry forth their plan, they need supplies that aren't available at school, so as a class they brainstormed a list of materials they need to achieve this project.

My students indicated that they need these supplies to plant, grow, and harvest the crops they will be growing in our school garden, as they learn about healthy eating and leading healthier lives.

Some of these supplies include: gardening gloves, wheelbarrow, diggers, weeders, rakes, trowels, pruners, jars, and pails. The student's then plan to learn more about nutrient dense food, and create yummy consumable recipes with their harvest.

As my students created their list of the materials they need for their project, the topic of nutrition expanded into healthy habits, which includes physical fitness. Thus, they found fitting that they should also include PE equipment to the materials needed, as they understand that being healthy is not just about what you eat, but also about physical activity. They indicated that they will use the PE equipment to accomplish at least 60 minutes of activity each day. Their plan is to use the equipment during their recess, lunch and PE time at school.

My students' plan also includes sharing their gained nutrition knowledge with their families at home, as well as encouraging each other to make healthy choices, as they work together on the garden.
