Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For six years, we have been on a school-wide journey to promote health and wellness because low-income, urban communities are among the hardest hit by obesity-related illnesses. We have made huge changes to our school lunch menu and integrated healthy eating and physical activity into the whole day.

Our school serves students aged 17-21 who have struggled to be successful in traditional high school settings.

We provide them with the opportunity to have a fresh start in a smaller, more personal environment. Our school is a Title 1 school, and almost all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students are adults, and many care for siblings, nieces and nephews, or their own children. They have the opportunity to influence the health and wellness of their entire families and to form healthy habits for their adult lives. Many of our students report that they rarely eat fruits and vegetables. We are determined to change this because we know that teaching them how to prepare healthy food is something that can stick with them for life.

My Project

We currently implement an after school healthy cooking program, as well as school-wide wellness activities that take place during advisory (40-minute daily class). These school-wide activities include cooking and nutrition lessons, one of which is making smoothies. Students learn about the nutritional benefits of breakfast and of varied fruits and vegetables, and then are able to make their own smoothies. We need a high-quality blender to supplement the one blender we currently have so that all the students can participate in these activities within the 40-minute class period. Having an additional blender will allow more students to have a hands-on cooking experience and make it possible for us to ensure that all 550 students in our school participate in this nutrition lesson.

We know from experience that our students love learning how to cook.

They marvel at how spinach can be disguised in to a fruit smoothie. They take recipes home and make them for their families. We are changing the health outcomes for our students with each positive experience they have with healthy food. This project will make a difference for our entire school community.
