My Students

Help us learn to eat healthy! Childhood obesity is a rising epidemic and sadly my students are falling prey to this dilemma with easy access to fast food and microwavable meals.

My students are fun loving teenagers with multiple disabilities ranging from physical disabilities, autism, down syndrome to mental retardation.

They LOVE TO LEARN and they do not allow their disabilities to impede their thirst for knowledge and their yearning to be as independent as possible. Most of my students are non-readers and require visual aids and hands-on activities to support their learning. Our school is an occupational training center, which means we teach life skills to prepare our students for work and make them as independent as possible when they graduate.

My Project

In my class, students are learning functional life skills, such as learning how to cook a simple but healthy meal. However, my classroom does not have the cooking utensils, pots and pans needed to learn to cook healthy meals. By fulfilling this request, my students will be able to learn to cook for themselves with the use of a picture cookbook we received from DonorsChoose. These skills will boost my students self-esteem and teach them to be more independent.

By supporting my project, you will provide a stepping stone to help bring my students one step closer to independence and a healthier lifestyle, in which they will value and use for the rest of their lives.
