This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My students are excited to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, especially during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science, and social studies.

My Project

At our school, we have a full, 6 hours and 40 minutes, kindergarten day. The children receive a free breakfast at 8:30 and a free lunch at 11:45 with no afternoon snack provided for the kids. We have school until 3:10 pm. At breakfast each morning, they receive a grain, dairy and fruit to eat. Some mornings, those grains are Fruit Loops or Trix cereal, concha, muffins or breakfast cookies. These items are part of the packages the school receives for breakfast. These items are a sugary start to the day. I would like to save those sweet grains for the afternoon recess and provide a morning breakfast with less sugar content. This is especially important for children who are very active naturally, needing a little more substance and less sugar to start their mornings.

I would like to offer my children Cheerios, Nature Valley Granola Bars, and chewy granola bars for a healthier breakfast option at 8:30 in the morning.

The sweet breakfast provided could then be an afternoon snack that will give my kids a little more energy at 2:00 pm to help them through the rest of the day. In this way, the kids are still getting a quality grain for breakfast and an afternoon boost to help them continue to learn throughout the afternoon until 3:10 pm.
