Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Healthy Active Children Everyday. I teach 6th grade Language Arts in a high need community. We have a diverse population that interacts very well. My students enjoy competing against each and love to show off their skills during any type of activity, academically oriented or not. Like most high need communities, financial resources are limited. The strain on the economy has hit our school and community extremely hard.

Our students participate in healthy activities everyday. When the sun smiles upon us we are outside; on those days when Mr. Gloomy pays us a visit, we are forced to stay indoors. Regardless of the weather, our students are involved in a 30 - 40 minute round of structured physical activity. The lack of equipment hinders our abilities to create a variety of physical activity. Budget constraints dictate what supplies and resources can be ordered for which department. We would love to have equipment to use in our structured games, but the budget does not allow it. The PE department has equipment, however they must use their equipment to fulfill the state standards of instruction. Borrowing equipment from the PE department is an option, but it is not always available because they must use their equipment during the course of their daily instruction.

Our students need equipment and we are requesting flags and hula hoops; these items can be utilized in various types of structured physical activities. The created activities incorporate team building, leadership, coordination, some competitiveness, lots of movement and plain old fashioned fun. Physical activity for most people, especially children, must have an element of fun in order to encourage and receive voluntary and continuous participation. Our students love the games we create, they are eager to participate and are acquiring life skills that will remain with them long after they leave our school.

In addition to the life skills these activities provide, our children are becoming healthy active children. According to the The American Heart Association, 30 minutes or more on most or all days can help improve your overall health. Childhood obesity is on the rise. Our students receive 30 minutes of structured physical activity 5 days a week. We are trying to keep our kids 'healthy and active'. Can you help us continue our efforts?
