My Project

Earlier this school year, I received a huge supply of healthy snacks and lunches for my students. We are down to 3 soups and a few bags of chips. The snacks and lunches were a big hit with students. Something I've continued to notice is that these food and snack options are not available to students when they travel to their internship sites 2-3 days/week.

I'm hoping to restock our snack supply so students can grab and go what they need to stay nourished while they're at their internship site each day.

In addition to learning in the classroom, our school requires students to spend half their school time off campus at internships throughout the city to gain tangible and meaningful learning experiences. Students have busy schedules and some struggle with housing and food security. Many students skip breakfast and other meals throughout their school and internship days. Most teachers in my school regularly spend money out of their own pockets buying food for students.

The cost of food in NYC is a barrier to many when finding healthy and affordable options for students and has only worsened as more and more federal resources and agencies are cuts. Families' EBT benefits have been delayed causing food shortages at home.

Many of our internships are either in food deserts or in areas where the cost of food is beyond unaffordable. Many of our internship sites aren't financially able to provide meals for our students.

When students are hungry, they struggle to engage and focus on learning. Knowing that there are snack items at school will help ease their minds and improve their mental and physical health. I hope that making snacks more available will help students stay better connected to school and internship experiences.
