Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of our students come from low-income households and do not have access to life essentials such as hygiene products and food. Because America's racial and ethnic minorities are the fastest-growing sectors in the country and they make up a disproportionately large segment of the economically poor population, tending to their educational needs is in everyone's interest. The level of their educational achievements will dramatically affect the future of our nation.

Our students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress.

I work at the Wellness Center, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.

My experience with DonorsChoose.org and sponsors has been very positive and I hope to continue using this site as a bridge between my students and those out there who would like to be part of this amazing opportunity that takes place every day in our school.

My Project

My students get nervous asking, but if they know they're available, hygiene products would help them tremendously. Sometimes, my students can't take a shower at home (due to water being cut off) or afford tampons. These products change not only a student's hygiene, but their confidence. Feeling fresh is a game changer and allows students to focus on classwork, rather than hiding out in the bathroom. Some students find that using a slender size, applicator-style tampon makes it easier to insert tampons at first. (An applicator with a rounded top can be especially helpful for beginners.)

Some low-income students often stay home when menstruating due to the cost of pads and tampons.

When students are on their period, they can sometimes feel nervous or irritable because they are concerned about "leaking". Fear of period leakage prevents students from being able to focus in class and that can overall impact educational outcomes. Without shame and fear, students have more opportunity to be successful in school, which is always a plus.
