This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Pre-K through elementary school in New York.

Our school is located in one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation.

Many of my students have special needs, are repeating a grade or are struggling academically to achieve grade level expectations. Many of my students are from single-parent homes and reside in nearby homeless shelters.

My students are a hard-working group who are persistent and determined to do well in school. They need essential resources to enable them to maximize learning opportunities and help them to do their best work every day.

My Project

A child's health should not be compromised because he or she lives in a homeless shelter or public housing. When many of my students had to relocate from their homes and move into a homeless shelter, they often had just a backpack with a change of clothes, the sneakers on their feet. and perhaps a notebook. No doubt, had to leave many things behind and or forgot to bring their toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, comb and other personal hygiene products.

It can be hard for a child to focus on academics and do their best work every day when their personal hygiene is not up to par.

To maximize learning opportunities and to help my students do their best work in class as they contend with the challenges they must face daily living in a homeless shelter, I am requesting the following essential items to assist my students with personal grooming and hygiene: storage baggies to keep all of their personal grooming items in one place, toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste to practice and maintain good oral hygiene habits, deodorant/antiperspirant, facial wipes, lip balm will help them maintain basic body care. The shampoo, combs and wet-napkins will help them attend to and learn the basics of personal grooming.

These resources are essential to building the self-esteem of children whose parents may not be able to afford these items because they had to leave so many items behind. With your help, these items will prevent my students from getting teased, picked on, or bullied because they lack the necessary resources to attend to their personal grooming and hygiene.
