Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Childhood obesity is the number one health concern affecting our children today. Kids spend the majority of the year in school, but not all schools offer a comprehensive and effective fitness education. I want to teach my kids about the importance of being fit and healthy.

My kids are 5th grade students, ages 11 & 12.

They are at a crucial developmental stage about to go through all the ups and downs of young adulthood. It is imperative that they be guided at this stage in their lives toward a healthy lifestyle. The choices they make now will affect who they become in the future. Many of my students have never even thought about what they need to do to be healthy. Too many live a sedentary lifestyle at home, either in front of the television or video game consul.

My Project

I plan to implement a 20-minute workout routine every morning with different tasks including squats, jumping jacks, push ups, running, sit ups, and jumping rope using this class set of jump ropes. I feel that 9 months of school and a 20-minute cardio workout everyday, Monday through Friday, will have an enormous positive effect on my students' minds and bodies. I'd like to do the workout with them every morning to get their energy up for tasks in class. Studies show that exercise can improve academic performance, so I feel that my project is a fantastic way to help their grades and improve their health.

My project is very important because it addresses a national epidemic.

Schools need to play a greater role in improving our children's physical fitness because kids spend the majority of their lives at school. Physical Education class for most students does not officially begin until they reach middle and high school. I feel that this type of instruction needs to begin earlier. Please support my efforts to help my elementary students form healthy habits and develop fit lifestyles. Thank you.
