This year begins my sixth year of teaching first grade students. I made a move this year to begin teaching at a brand new school in one of the fastest growing areas in South Carolina. I have a class of 23 students...that could grow any day because of all the movement into our area. Our school is a neighborhood one, that boasts many walkers and bike riders on any given morning or afternoon.

With all the "publicity" in the news lately about our current situation with Health Care Reform, I know that the children hear about it somehow. Either straight from the television or from discussions their parents have. This is not an easy topic to discuss and certainly not a simple one to provide a solution to. But what I can do now, is begin preparing these children for a healthier lifestyle that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Being at a new school, especially in this economy, can mean less resources. I came with what I had collected in my six years of teaching and needless to say, that wasn't a lot. What we need are the basic materials to begin understanding health care at its foundation. We need a set of books to read, a food guide pyramid and a set of plastic foods to sort into categories and groups.

The more that these children learn about caring for themselves now, hopefully the less problems they will face in the future. Help me, help them, get this Health Care Crisis Under Control by teaching them and providing them with the necessary materials to learn about healthy choices. You will make an immediate difference in the way I teach these first graders about health, and you will also be making a lasting impression on their lives to come.
